Back-to-School Safety Tips for Students and Parents

Posted: August 17, 2025

The first day of school is just around the corner, and the Village of Millbrook Police Department wants to remind students, parents, and drivers to prioritize safety as we kick off another school year. Whether your children are walking, biking, or riding the bus, safety is key to ensuring a smooth and secure start to the school year. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind as we head back to school:

1. Pedestrian Safety: Look, Listen, and Be Seen

  • Walk with a buddy: It’s always safer to walk with a friend or group.
  • Use crosswalks: Always cross the street at designated crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing, even if the light is green.
  • Stay visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when visibility may be poor.

2. Biking Safety: Ride Smart

  • Wear a helmet: A properly fitting helmet is one of the most important safety tools for cyclists.
  • Use hand signals: Teach your children to use hand signals when turning or stopping, and make sure they always stay in the bike lane.
  • Inspect the bike: Before school starts, check that your child’s bike is in good working condition—ensure brakes, tires, and lights are functioning properly.

3. School Bus Safety: Wait for the Signal

  • Wait for the bus to stop fully: Never approach the bus until it has come to a complete stop and the stop sign has been fully extended.
  • Be mindful of the “Danger Zone”: Teach children to stay at least 10 feet away from the bus when getting on or off. This area is the most dangerous, and drivers may not be able to see kids who wander too close.
  • Cross carefully: If your child has to cross in front of the bus, remind them to always wait for the driver’s signal to cross safely.

4. Driver Safety: Be Aware in School Zones

  • Slow down in school zones: Many schools have reduced speed limits during the school day, so be sure to observe posted signs.
  • Watch for children: Kids may be walking, biking, or playing near school grounds. Always drive with caution, especially in the morning and after school.
  • Stop for school buses: If you see a school bus with its lights flashing and stop arm extended, you must stop, even if you are driving in the opposite direction. This is the law, and it’s critical to protect our children.

5. Stranger Danger: Teach Awareness

  • Know the route: Talk with your child about the safest route to and from school and make sure they understand to never accept rides from strangers.
  • Recognize the signs: Discuss with your child what to do if a stranger approaches them, and make sure they know how to contact a trusted adult in case of an emergency.

6. Emergency Plans: Stay Prepared

  • Have a backup plan: Make sure your child knows who to contact in case of an emergency or if school is unexpectedly dismissed early.
  • Keep emergency contacts updated: Ensure the school has the correct information on file, including any changes in phone numbers or emergency contacts.
